Malibu 29, Santa Clara 28--Josh Paxton kicked a 23-yard field goal with 28 seconds to play to lift Malibu (1-7-1, 1-3) to its first-ever Frontier League victory in a homecoming game at Santa Clara.

Santa Clara (0-9, 0-3) attempted a field goal on its final possession, but Patrick Kerns’ try from the 38-yard line was blocked by linebacker Dane Skophammer with five seconds to play.

Santa Clara overcame a 14-8 halftime deficit and took a 28-26 lead on a seven-yard touchdown pass from Jimmie Griffin to David Ramirez with 3:21 to play.

Griffin scored on touchdowns runs of one, 10 and two yards, but finished with minus-25 yards in eight carries. He completed 24 of 34 passes for 300 yards, including 238 yards and the touchdown to Ramirez in the second half.

Ramirez had eight catches for 133 yards. Skophammer carried eight times for 44 yards for Malibu.
