Chavez Scores Four Times as Loara Trounces Katella

Billy Chavez scored four touchdowns and the Loara defense forced seven turnovers as the Saxons defeated Katella, 40-7, in an Empire League game Friday night at Glover Stadium.

The victory by Loara (5-4, 4-0 in league) clinched a playoff berth for the Saxons as well as for Cypress (3-1) and Kennedy (3-1). Loara will try to win the league title outright next week when it faces Kennedy.

Chavez, who finished the night with 31 carries for 191 yards, scored on a one-yard run to cap a 15-play, 65-yard, seven-minute drive in the first quarter.

The Saxons put the game out of reach by scoring three touchdowns in less than two minutes midway in the second quarter.

Mihn Nguyen caught a short pass from Ryan Gusman and broke four tackles for a 75-yard touchdown play with 6:06 left in the first half. The extra point try failed.

Omar Trujillo recovered a fumbled on-side kick to give Loara possession on the Katella 43-yard line. Running back Jonathan Diullo took a lateral and then threw a 41-yard pass to Chavez to set up a two-yard touchdown run by Chavez. The two-point conversion attempt was intercepted by David Demarco.

Diullo scored on a 30-yard interception return with 4:10 left in the second quarter to increase the Loara lead to 26-0.

Loara put together its second seven-minute, 65-yard drive to open the second half with Chavez scoring from the nine.

Following an interception by Rudy Acosta, Chavez scored his fourth touchdown, a 30-yard run, with 2:54 left in the third quarter.

Katella (1-3, 3-6) avoided a shutout when Ruben Torres returned a blocked punt 12 yards for a touchdown.

The Saxons intercepted five passes to frustrate the Katella offense.
