Mountain Subdivisions

* The recent Times article, “Residents Object to Land-Use Plan” (Oct. 24), dealing with the Santa Monica Mountains North Area Plan, mistakenly implied that the county “frequently approved subdivisions much larger than were permitted” between 1980 and 1990.

The 37 plan amendments analyzed during the 10-year period resulted in only 814 additional homes--an average of about 80 homes per year. Hardly a building boom! Further, many of the plan amendments dealt with issues of protecting significant ecological resources, making textual changes, and providing low- and moderate-income housing--not adding density.

During the period studied, all development approved in the Santa Monica Mountains area was the product of the developers reaching consensus with their neighbors and the surrounding community.
