Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils can consider themselves lucky.

Brodeur was knocked unconscious while trying to stop Alexsey Morozov’s go-ahead goal late in the second period of the Devils’ 4-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday night at East Rutherford, N.J. But his injury could have been a lot worse.

Brodeur, off-balance while reacting to Morozov’s shot off a rebound at 15:50 of the second, fell backward and struck his head on the ice. Brodeur, who said he lost consciousness for about 20 seconds, lay motionless for several minutes before leaving under his own power.

“When I was going off, I looked up at the scoreboard and said, ‘2-1? They scored?’ ” Brodeur said. “I didn’t really ask the question until I got inside.”

The team said Brodeur, who was replaced by Chris Terreri, was cut on the left side of his head. His status for today’s game against Buffalo was uncertain.

“Right now, I couldn’t play,” Brodeur said. “It’s up to the coaches if they want to put me in. I should be fine.”

The defending Stanley Cup champion Devils, who lost their fourth straight and extended their winless steak to five, got goals from Bobby Holik and Scott Stevens.

Minnesota 5, Chicago 2--Marian Gaborik and Stacy Roest scored 39 seconds apart early in the third period to lead the Wild at Chicago.

Cam Stewart, Filip Kuba, and Antti Laalsonen also scored for Minnesota.

Tampa Bay 3, Montreal 1--Fredrik Modin scored the go-ahead goal two minutes into the third period and Kevin Weekes made 26 saves for the Lightning at Tampa, Fla.

The Lightning (5-7-1-1), which has lost 50 or more games each of the last three seasons, has won three straight to move into first place in Southeast Division.
