A suspicious fire caused at least $1 million in damage to several businesses at a strip mall Wednesday morning, Los Angeles County Fire Department officials said.

Firefighters were dispatched to the mall at 5211 E. Washington Blvd. at 4:10 a.m. and had the blaze knocked down about two hours later, said Fire Department supervisor Cheryl Paterson.

No one was injured, although residents from a few nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution, authorities said.

“Eight of the 10 units on the second floor were destroyed or heavily damaged by the fire,” said fire Capt. Charles Gutierrez. “About the same number of units underneath them suffered water damage.”

Gutierrez said arson investigators were called to the fire.
