Kapono Is Injured in Exhibition

Jason Kapono, the Bruins’ leading scorer, is scheduled for X-rays today to determine whether he sustained a broken nose in Wednesday’s 81-78 exhibition victory over the EA Sports/California Southwest All-Stars at Pauley Pavilion.
Kapono left the game after six minutes and did not return. He said he was “dazed” after a collision in which he was elbowed in the nose. The 14th-ranked Bruins resume the regular season Tuesday against Cal State Northridge, and Kapono said he could play even if his nose is broken.
In Kapono’s absence, walk-on senior guard Jason Flowers played 19 minutes and had four assists and no turnovers. Flowers did not play in the Bruins’ first two regular-season games.
“Jason Flowers gave us a real spark,” Coach Steve Lavin said. “Flowers basically worked himself into the rotation with tonight’s performance.”
Said Flowers: “That’s very encouraging for someone in my situation, but I’ve got to keep working hard. There’s never a time when I can kick back and say I’ve arrived.”
Earl Watson led UCLA with 26 points, with former Bruin Kris Johnson leading EA Sports with 20.
