Two people died in a fiery car crash on an Agoura Hills road Wednesday night despite attempts by passersby to rescue them, police said.

The accident occurred about 10:30 p.m. on Kanan Road just south of Silver Creek Road, said California Highway Patrol Officer Rosa Ray.

A woman speeding in a 2000 Ford Expedition lost control, ran off the road and struck a light pole, Ray said. The vehicle slid into a dirt embankment and burst into flames.

A passing motorist pulled the woman out of the car. Attempts were made by passersby to pull a male passenger out of the car but the would-be rescuers were driven back by flames, Ray said. The man burned to death in the car and the woman died at the scene from her injuries, Ray said.

Neither the man nor the woman have been identified because of their injuries, Ray said.

It is unknown whether alcohol was a factor. Serial numbers on the tires show that they were not part of the Firestone recall of tires with faulty treads, Ray said.
