Misunderstood Musicals

In our modern day where, sadly, the great American songs can’t be found on the radio, a respected theater is thankfully making magnificent Rodgers & Hart music available, and what does The Times do? Puts the kibosh on it (“ ‘Beguiled Again’ Tripped Up by Silly Pranks,” by Daryl H. Miller, Nov. 15).

International City Theatre’s production of “Beguiled Again” is as fresh and as wonderfully presented as anything I’ve seen in years. Revues many times wear thin as the evening progresses, with no story to propel the songs, but Jules Aaron and Roger Castellano have put together an inventive, creative, thoroughly entertaining evening.

Daryl Miller was obviously having a bad day when he saw “Beguiled Again.” He makes it sound like some silly sitcom. This show was first-class all the way.

Mr. Miller, it’s time to stop mourning Lorenz Hart’s passing and start enjoying his songs. Angelenos, go see this show!

I just couldn’t resist commenting on Don Shirley’s review of “Mack & Mabel” (“Music of a Silent-Era Love Affair,” Nov. 10).

It’s obvious that Shirley does not appreciate what many would consider classic American musical comedy. His negative nit-picking got very tiring and at times ludicrous.

I thought the performance and the entire evening were truly magical. Do yourself a favor and disregard Shirley’s review.
