Nazarov, Traverse Are Traded

Pierre Gauthier, team president and general manager, made a trade Saturday with the Boston Bruins that certainly falls into the category of addition by subtraction.

Gauthier sent winger Andrei Nazarov and defenseman Patrick Traverse to the Bruins to get Samuel Pahlsson, a 22-year-old Swedish center who had one goal and two points in 17 games. Nazarov and Traverse had a goal apiece and were scratched by Duck Coach Craig Hartsburg in Wednesday’s 3-0 loss to the Colorado Avalanche.

“They certainly hadn’t fit in yet,” Gauthier said of Nazarov and Traverse, who were acquired in separate off-season deals. “Some of our other guys have come in and fit in better.”

Pahlsson was part of the deal last spring that sent Ray Bourque from the Bruins to Colorado. Pahlsson was the Avalanche’s seventh-round pick in the 1996 draft. He was a teammate in Sweden of Vancouver’s Sedin twins, Daniel and Henrik.

“He’s the kind of guy we needed to add to the club,” Gauthier said of Pahlsson, who is expected to join the club in time to play tonight against the New York Islanders. “He’s a gritty guy with skill.

“I’ve seen him a lot over the years. He’s been a national team player for quite a while. I remember a great game I saw two years ago. Malmo with [current Duck defenseman] Niclas Havelid was playing against MoDo with the Sedin brothers and Pahlsson.”
