Donations Sought for Families of Arizona Crash Victims

Donations are being accepted on behalf of the families of five of the seven people killed Monday in a head-on collision in Arizona.

The Dolores Mission Catholic Church is accepting the money for the families of four adults and one child who were killed.

Consuelo Valdez, a community organizer for Dolores Mission, said calls have been pouring in with offers of support for the Zapata and Lima families.

Victims Consuelo Zapata, 52, Dora Lima Zapata, 39, Milvia Lima, 34, and Anthony Lucero, 14 months, were all from Boyle Heights. Maria Teresa Zapata, 78, was visiting relatives from Guatemala.

Their van burst into flames on an Arizona highway when it collided with a car driven by Van Nuys businessman Mohammad Islam, 42. He and his 14-year-old son, Rafiqul Islam, were also killed, authorities said.

Islam’s daughter, Rumana, 19, was treated for minor injuries and released. His wife, Feroza Bilkis, 36, was hospitalized with stomach injuries at Flagstaff Medical Center, where she was listed in fair condition.

Thirteen members of the Boyle Heights family were also injured, including Milvia Lima’s daughter, Ulisa, 5, who was so badly burned her arms may be amputated, authorities said. She is at the Maricopa County Burn Center in Arizona.
