A Santa Ana security guard was in jail Thursday on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after he shot and wounded a man during a bar melee, police said.

Victor Manuel Chimel, 40, was arrested Wednesday night at Marisco Bar in the 3600 block of West 5th Street in Santa Ana, said police Sgt. Raul Luna. According to authorities, Chimel shot Raymond Gonzalez, 21, also of Santa Ana, following an altercation between the two shortly after 10 p.m.

Gonzalez, wounded in the abdomen with a single shot, was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he was listed in fair condition Thursday, Luna said.

According to police, Gonzales was thrown out of the bar earlier in the evening after he and Chimel got into a fight. He returned minutes later to confront the security guard.

“Apparently the two knew each other,” Luna said. “Witnesses saw them fighting again, and then there was a shot fired.”

Chimel may also be charged with carrying a concealed weapon because he did not have a permit to carry the “large caliber” semiautomatic pistol used in the shooting, Luna said.

Chimel was being held Thursday on $50,000 bail at Santa Ana city jail.
