Stanford Pulls Away to Victory

Ryan Mendez scored 18 points and Casey Jacobsen 16 as No. 5 Stanford pulled away in the second half to beat Old Dominion, 84-60, Thursday in the Puerto Rico Shootout at Bayamon, Puerto Rico.

Stanford led, 36-26, at halftime, and used a 10-2 run capped by Jason Collins’ layup to make it 50-32 with 14:44 left.

The Cardinal (2-0) kept building its advantage and went up by as many as 30 points--at 71-41 with under six minutes remaining on Mendez’s three-point basket.

Stanford Coach Mike Montgomery said he wasn’t pleased with his team’s first-half performance.

“We missed a lot of shots,” he said. “We’d come down, they’d foul us. We’d miss free throws. We were getting a lot of good looks and missing shots.”

Pierre Greene scored 10 points for Old Dominion (1-2), while Ricardo Marsh and Andreas Themistocleous added seven apiece.

No. 13 Utah 94, American 37--Trace Caton scored 19 points and Utah closed the first half with a 39-6 run in the Puerto Rico Shootout.

Utah outrebounded its Division II opponent, 45-15.

Chris Burgess added 11 points for Utah (2-0), which used 13 players, each playing at least 11 minutes. Kevin Bradly had 10 points and six assists. American (0-1) did not have a player in double figures.

Syracuse 92, No. 21 DePaul 82--The Orangemen advanced to the semifinals of the Great Alaska Shootout at Anchorage. Syracuse will play Ohio State tonight.

OTHER GAMES

Georgia 82, Indiana State 64--Ezra Williams scored 21 points to lead Georgia in another Puerto Rico Shootout game.

Robb Dryden, Georgia’s 7-1 center, had three blocks and nine rebounds. Anthony Evans added 15 points and four assists for the Bulldogs (1-2).

Michael Menser scored 15 points, all on three-point shots, and Djibril Kante had 12 for Indiana State (0-1).

Memphis 60, Miami of Ohio 59--Scooter McFadgon’s jump shot with a half-minute left lifted Memphis to a win in the Puerto Rico Shootout, Coach John Calipari’s first victory with the Tigers.

Kelly Wise led Memphis (1-1) with 22 points and 14 rebounds.

Guard Jason Grunkemeyer had 24 points for Miami (0-2).

Ohio State 90, Florida State 65--Perfect shooting and 23 points by Brian Brown led the Buckeyes to victory in a first-round game of the Great Alaska Shootout.

Brown made all nine of his shots, including five from three-point range for Ohio State (2-0).

Reserve Mike Mathews led the Seminoles (0-2) with 16 points.
