A man stabbed Friday in the parking lot of an El Rio Mexican restaurant was identified by authorities Saturday as 24-year-old Rigoberto Rodriguez Reyes.

The El Rio resident was stabbed in the stomach about 2 p.m. Friday during a fight with unknown assailants in the 2800 block of Vineyard Avenue, according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies and hospital employees refused to release Reyes’ condition Saturday night, except to say he had undergone surgery and was expected to survive.

Although detectives initially linked the stabbing to a series of gang-related shootings in Oxnard over the last two weeks, sheriff’s spokesman Eric Nishimoto said late Saturday that possibility is still under investigation.
