Orange Coast Stuns No. 2 Mt. SAC, 26-25

Rob Pate kicked a 33-yard field goal with one second remaining in the fourth quarter Saturday night to give previously winless Orange Coast a 26-25 victory over Mt. San Antonio, the second-ranked team in the state, in a Mission Conference football game.

The Pirates (1-3) trailed, 25-17, before quarterback Nick Higgs hit Justin Dale with a 21-yard touchdown pass that cut the Mounties’ lead to 25-23 with 3:22 left in the fourth quarter. Higgs’ pass was intercepted on the two-point conversion attempt.

Orange Coast got the ball back with 2:01 remaining and drove 50 yards in 13 plays to set up Pate’s winning field goal.

Running back Jared Kemp, who led the Pirates with 54 yards in 11 carries, put Orange Coast on the board first with a 10-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, and later scored on a five-yard run that put the Pirates up, 17-6, with 1:17 remaining in the third quarter, before Mt. SAC (3-1) scored 19 unanswered points over the next 7:46.

Higgs completed 18 of 37 passes for 210 yards, while Dale had six catches for 84 yards and a touchdown. Pate also kicked a 42-yard field goal in the third quarter that put Orange Coast up, 10-6.

In other Mission Conference games:

Cerritos 45, Golden West 7--Brandon Huey caught a 64-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Adam Weaver with 21 seconds remaining in the third quarter for Golden West’s lone score. Ricky Quintana led the Rustlers (0-4) with 61 yards rushing. Cerritos is 4-0.

Pasadena 28, Santa Ana 24--Grant Wagner threw for 299 yards and three touchdowns but the Dons (0-4) fell short at Pasadena. Derrick Barnes caught six passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns. Pasadena is 4-0.

Riverside 26, Fullerton 20 (OT)--Marcus Guzman carried 28 times for 137 yards and three touchdowns, helping to deny Fullerton its first win of the season.

The Hornets (0-4) tied the score three minutes into the fourth quarter on Matt Gogan’s two-yard touchdown run. But in attempting to gain the lead, Fullerton failed on a two-point conversion try and the the score remained tied until regulation ended.

Gogan carried 27 times for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Jeff Crooks completed six of 16 passes for 59 yards, and threw two interceptions. He also carried 12 times for 65 yards, and ran 84 yards for a second-quarter touchdown.

Riverside (3-1, 3-1) gained 379 yards in total offense, while holding the host Hornets to 279 yards.

Saddleback 24, Long Beach 19--Chris Bernard gained 314 all-purpose yards to lead the Gauchos to their first victory of the season.

The tailback carried 23 times for 114 yards and completed two of two passes for 120 yards on options. He also intercepted a pass and ran back three kickoffs for 69 yards for Saddleback.

Holding a four-point fourth-quarter lead, Saddleback (1-3) gambled on a fake punt to keep the drive alive. Three plays later, Oscar Montecinos, making his first start at quarterback, ran 25 yards into for an insurance touchdown.

Long Beach is 2-2.

In the Cuesta women’s water polo tournament:

Rustlers are champions--Undefeated Golden West shut out Riverside, 11-0, in the championship game. The Rustlers (14-0) reached the title game with an 11-3 semifinal victory over Sierra. Anna Korobova scored nine goals in the two games.
