A Comet Leads Brazil to Bronze

Like Sheryl Swoopes, Janeth Arcain won the WNBA championship with the Houston Comets last month.

Swoopes picked up a gold medal with the U.S. team Saturday.

Arcain grabbed a bronze for Brazil.

Arcain’s 28 points led Brazil to an 84-73 overtime victory over South Korea in the bronze-medal game at the SuperDome.

Arcain tried to win the game in regulation, but her shot in the final seconds was partially blocked.

In overtime, she repeatedly drove and got to the line, scoring seven points, mostly on free throws.

Alessandra Oliveira added 26 points with 16 rebounds.

Jung Sun-Min scored 23 for South Korea with Park Jung-Eun finishing with 22.

This Brazilian team won the silver medal in Atlanta with a 111-87 loss to the U.S.

But Brazil is missing its famous stars, Hortencia and Paula--known by their first names in the Brazilian tradition--because they have retired.

“For us, this medal has a taste of gold because we went through so much and stayed together,” Arcain said. “It is exceptionally satisfying and we are exceptionally happy with the medal because this generation will make Brazil proud. We cannot always remember Hortencia and Paula. These are new faces, a new group.”
