Today is the first day of trash collection by the city’s new waste hauler, Federal Disposal Service Management. Federal Disposal won the bid this year amid protests, petitions and legal challenges from the city’s longtime trash collector, Waste Management.
Waste Management had been the city’s trash hauler for 30 years before the City Council called for open bidding designed to increase competition and reduce rates.
Federal Disposal, the lowest bidder, received a $4.2-million contract. Opponents of the switch collected signatures to have Waste Management reinstated and fought unsuccessfully in court to have the petitions recognized by the council.
City officials have said the switch will save residents and business owners $17.4 million during the seven-year period. Information: (714) 542-0577.
