Angel right fielder Tim Salmon will undergo surgery Thursday to release pressure on the plantar fascia, the tight band of muscle beneath the arch of his right foot.

Salmon experienced discomfort for most of September, and the pain relegated him to designated hitter for the final two weeks of the season. He had the same procedure done on his left foot after the 1998 season and has had experienced no ill effects.

“This wasn’t an easy decision, but it’s the right decision,” Salmon said. “I could have given it the whole winter to rest, but in all likelihood it will probably resurface again, and if that happens during the season, it would really be a mess to deal with. My other foot turned out great, and if I have as much success with this surgery as I did with that one, I’ll be fine.”
