Eagles’ Staley Will Sit Out Against Redskins

Running back Duce Staley of the Philadelphia Eagles will sit out Sunday’s game against the Washington Redskins because of a sprained right foot.

Staley, who was downgraded from questionable on Thursday, left last Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons in the fourth quarter.

He’ll be replaced in the starting lineup by former Redskin Brian Mitchell, who had an 85-yard touchdown run against the Falcons to go along with an 89-yard touchdown on a kickoff return. Mitchell returned a punt 72 yards for a touchdown the previous week against the New Orleans Saints.

“He’s done a nice job,” Eagle Coach Andy Reid said. “The returns are a plus and that’s great. That’s something that has helped us win football games. We were hoping to get that [when we signed him]. You can’t predict how many touchdowns a guy is going to get on returns, but he has done a really nice job there.”

Darnell Autry, who hasn’t played in a game since Dec. 1998, and fullback Stanley Pritchett could also get some carries against the Redskins.

Tennessee Titan receiver Carl Pickens could sit out the Titans’ game against his former Cincinnati Bengal teammates Sunday because of a lingering hamstring injury.

“I’m trying to stay positive. I have to keep my head up,” Pickens said. “This has been a really rough week for me. I’m new here and I want to do the right thing, and this is really slowing me down.”

Meanwhile, wide receiver Chris Jackson, who was the rookie of the year in the Arena Football League while playing for the Avengers, was signed by the Titans and assigned to their five-man practice squad.

Wideout Amani Toomer and linebacker Mike Barrow took it easy at practice because of injuries and could be sidelined for the New York Giants’ game against the Falcons on Sunday.

Toomer was limited for the second straight day by a toe injury. Barrow is bothered by a neck injury.
