An Aeromexico plane carrying 83 passengers ran off a runway in northern Mexico on Friday, smashed into a group of homes and then skidded into a canal, killing at least six people on the ground, a Red Cross official said.

At least 40 of the passengers suffered scrapes and bruises on the flight from Mexico City to Reynosa, just across the border from McAllen, Texas, Dr. Rito Zambrano of the Red Cross said.

The flight had been scheduled to continue to the border city of Matamoros.

Aeromexico Flight 250 was landing in stormy weather related to Tropical Depression Keith shortly after 5 p.m. when it crashed into at least three homes just beyond the runway, then struck six people walking along a drainage canal, Zambrano said. He had no further details on the victims.

A woman and three children inside one of the houses that was destroyed were unharmed, Zambrano said.

Aeromexico officials said they had no information on the crash.

Keith, which became a hurricane last week, weakened as it moved over the northern state of Tamaulipas, where Reynosa is located.
