Led by Bryan Arguello, Villa Park defeated Savanna, 49-7, at Glover Stadium Friday.

Arguello, the Century League MVP in 1999 who had a kick return for a touchdown last week, returned the opening kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown, caught five passes for 131 yards including a 12-yard touchdown reception, and had a 76-yard reception in the fourth. Arguello also kicked six extra points.

“The opening kickoff for a touchdown is always nice,” Villa Park Coach Pat Mahoney said. “Arguello can make someone miss, and when he gets a wall to run behind, he’s tough to catch.”

Villa Park’s John Henry Jackson completed eight of 15 passes for 196 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Ricky Campos gained 113 yards rushing in 17 carries, including a two-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

“Jackson is a good, all-around quarterback,” Mahoney said. “He gets the job done, has learned to avoid the rush, and throws well. Campos is just tough, not a breakaway threat, but a fine running back.”

Undefeated Villa Park opens defense of its league title next week against El Modena.

“Going into the league, we’re healthy,” Mahoney said.

Savanna running back Raul Diaz gained 110 yards in 20 carries, and had a two-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
