A gun battle on the Golden State Freeway Wednesday night left one person injured and police searching for a suspect in a Glendale apartment building.

The shooting began about 8:15 p.m. when gunfire erupted between two dark-colored vehicles traveling north on the 5 freeway near the Ventura Freeway. Police said horrified motorists and a Los Angeles Police Department officer witnessed the shooting.

The officer followed one of the cars into Glendale, where the driver abandoned it in front of an apartment complex in the 1000 block of Irving Avenue.

Police surrounded the building and began looking for the man with the help of a canine unit.

“I’ve locked my door, and I’m a little scared,” said Ofelia Mkrtchian, who has lived in the complex for three years. “There’s never been a major thing like this on our block since I’ve lived there.”

Another man, who police believe was wounded in the incident, was questioned by police at a friend’s home in the 2300 block of Catalina Street in Burbank, said Sgt. Kevin Krafft of the Burbank Police Department.

Krafft said the man or his friend had called police to report the shooting, and said the victim was not seriously injured.

Police said late Wednesday that they didn’t know what set off the clash and that no arrests had yet been made.
