Mascari a Triple Threat, El Toro Tops Trabuco Hills

El Toro’s Vinnie Mascari had a hand in every facet of the Chargers’ 33-14 South Coast League victory over host Trabuco Hills Friday night.

Playing on offense, defense and special teams, Mascari scored two touchdowns, one on an incredible 82-yard punt return. He had two interceptions, one of which led to the second touchdown for the Chargers (3-3, 1-0).

Then for good measure, he opened the second half with a 92-yard kickoff return for a score, only to have it called back by a holding penalty.

Trabuco Hills (2-4, 0-1) scored the game’s first touchdown on a 13-yard run by Daniel Tellez with seven minutes 27 seconds left in the first quarter.

After that, El Toro took control.

Quarterback Tom Kirchmeyer found Mascari for the Chargers’ first score on a three-yard pass play to tie the score, 7-7, in the second quarter. Following Mascari’s first interception, Nick Walsh scored the first of two touchdowns seven plays later on a one-yard plunge.

Two minutes later it was Mascari again, this time on a 82-yard punt return that gave the Chargers a 20-7 halftime edge.

Following Walsh’s second touchdown--a four-yard run in the third quarter--the Mustangs opened the fourth quarter with a touchdown by Tellez on a 22-yard run. Tellez was the only bright spot in Trabuco Hills’ offense. He rushed 28 times for 125 yards.
