The Ojai Valley Youth Foundation has been chosen for a $5,000 grant from a national organization that promotes civic groups in small towns.

The National Center for Small Communities, a nonprofit group in Washington, D.C., chose Ojai City Councilman Steve Olsen for its American Hometown Leadership Award. He was one of 300 winners nationwide. In 1996, Olsen helped launch numerous youth programs in Ojai, including formation of the Ojai Valley Youth Foundation.

The grant was given to the city in Olsen’s honor for use in youth foundation programs, said Caryn Bosson, executive director of the foundation. The money will pay for the salaries of teenagers employed as neighborhood civic organizers at the foundation and for other programs, Bosson said.

Wal-Mart co-sponsored the awards and gave more than $720,000 to the 300 nationwide recipients, Bosson said.
