County Begins Work on New Fire Station
The Ventura County Fire Department broke ground Tuesday on its newest station, which is expected to shorten response times in Camarillo.
Station 50 is being built on the east end of Camarillo Airport, with direct access to Las Posas Road, department spokeswoman Sandi Wells said.
Engines dispatched from the current station, which will be closed, have to cross airport land before getting into the community.
“This is going to save us quite a few minutes in responding,” Wells said.
The new station will be 11,000 square feet, 4,000 square feet bigger than the current station. The larger size will help accommodate larger, more modern equipment, as well as provide a new home for the county’s hazardous-materials team.
Camarillo will give the team a more centralized location than its current Moorpark home, Wells said.
The Camarillo project is part of an upgrade affecting half a dozen stations across the county, Wells said.
The new Camarillo facility will cost $3.2 million, which includes the land, equipment, architects and construction, she said.
The department plans to have the station open in June.
