Supervisors Delay Hearing on Mine
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday granted a request by the city of Santa Clarita to postpone next week’s hearing on a proposed 78-million-ton gravel mine in Soledad Canyon.
By a 4-0 vote (with Supervisor Gloria Molina absent), the board voted to put off the hearing on Transit Mixed Concrete Co.’s proposed mine for 90 days. Santa Clarita leaders had asked for a 120-day delay of the scheduled Oct. 24 hearing, but said they could live with the shorter period.
Opposition to the mine is running high in the Santa Clarita Valley, where residents fear the project will turn the air brown with dust, suck up ground water and clog already-congested roadways with gravel-filled trucks. Last week, about 3,000 residents attended a city-sponsored rally against the project.
Transit Mixed officials said they were disappointed over the board’s decision to delay the hearing.
