Monrovia Youth Arraigned in Shootout With Deputies

A 16-year-old Monrovia youth who is accused of initiating a shootout with four sheriff’s deputies and critically wounding one of them was arraigned in Superior Court on Wednesday.

Kiwon Akeem Glover pleaded not guilty to four counts of “willful, deliberate and premeditated attempted murder of a peace officer,” said Deputy Dist. Atty. Darren Levine of the Crimes Against Peace Officers Section. “The defendant fired six rounds in an ambush-style shooting.”

Glover will be tried as an adult, with each of the four accounts carrying a potential sentence of 25 years to life, Levine said.

Deputy Richard Adams was struck in his left shoulder by a bullet that traveled along his chest and was lodged in his hip, where it still remains, Levine said.

Adams was in critical condition but is now in stable condition and recovering, authorities said.

On Oct. 8, the four county deputies responded to a call regarding shots that had been fired at south Shamrock and Euclid streets in an unincorporated area near Monrovia, county Deputy Carlos Lopez said.

They arrived on the scene in two separate patrol cars, and no suspects were visible, he said. As the deputies gathered on foot at the intersection to discuss the situation, shots were fired without warning, authorities said.

The deputies returned fire but Glover was not wounded, authorities said. He was arrested at the scene.

The preliminary trial date is set for Oct. 25.
