The men’s basketball team at UC Irvine has today off and will resume preseason workouts Saturday in preparation for its exhibition opener against South Dakota at 7 p.m. Nov. 3 in the Bren Center.

Coach Pat Douglass said he has been pleased with the way things have been going so far. However, senior Malachi Edmond, who is expected to be the team’s starting point guard, has been slowed by a groin injury and 6-foot-9 freshman forward Stanislav Zuzak has a sore back.

The Irvine women’s team resumes practicing today after taking Thursday off. The Anteaters open Nov. 14 at 7 p.m at the Bren Center in an exhibition against the Chinese national team.

Laker assistant Tex Winter, who was men’s coach at Long Beach State from 1978-1983, will be the featured speaker Oct. 29 at 5 p.m. when the 49ers host their annual tip-off dinner at The Grand at Willow Street Center.

Winter had a record of 78-67 at Long Beach and took the 49ers to the 1981 NIT.

Tickets for the event are $35 each. Reservations are required. The Grand is the former Long Beach Elks Club and is located at 4101 E. Willow Street. For information call (562) 985-4662.
