Victory Caps Roy’s Night

Patrick Roy celebrated his first home appearance since his record 448th victory with 24 saves and an assist as the Colorado Avalanche defeated the winless Florida Panthers, 5-1, Friday night.

Roy’s shutout bid was spoiled by Ray Whitney in the third period.

Roy was honored during a lengthy ceremony before the game.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman presented Roy with one of his sticks dipped in silver. He also received a golf cart.

After a video of his career highlights was shown on the scoreboard at Pepsi Center, Roy, 35, skated onto the ice to cheers of “Roy, Roy, Roy.” He was joined by his wife and three children, along with his parents and brother and sister.

Gov. Bill Owens proclaimed Oct. 20-26 as Patrick Roy Week and gave the goalie the Colorado state flag that flew over the Statehouse on the day Roy broke the record.

Calgary 3, Boston 2--The Flames scored three goals in less than six minutes of the first period and held on to beat the Bruins at Calgary.

Valeri Bure had two assists in the first period as the Flames scored three times against Boston rookie goalie Andrew Raycroft.

After scoring a team-leading 35 goals last season, Bure has yet to score in seven games this season. Going back to last year, Bure has gone 22 games without a goal.

San Jose 3, Minnesota 1--The Sharks killed six power plays by the Wild and got their first road win of the season.

The Sharks’ penalty-killing unit, which entered the game leading the league in efficiency, killed all four penalties in the first period, allowing only one shot.

The Sharks outshot Minnesota, 13-4, in the third period.

Dallas 5, Chicago 1--Joe Nieuwendyk had two goals and the Stars scored three times in a three-minute span of the second period at Chicago for their fourth consecutive victory.

Rookie backup goalie Marty Turco got his first career victory, stopping 17 shots. Former Blackhawk goalie Ed Belfour got the night off.

New York Islanders 5, Atlanta 3--Zdeno Chara and Roman Hamrlik scored short-handed goals 69 seconds apart in a four-goal opening period as the Islanders won their first game of the season, beating the winless Thrashers at Atlanta.

Detroit defenseman Chris Chelios underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Friday and will be out six or seven games. Chelio twisted his knee Tuesday night against St. Louis. . . . The Vancouver Canucks have given right wing Trent Klatt a two-year, $1.8-million contract extension that will keep him with the team through the end of the 2002-03 season. . . . Ottawa Senator center Radek Bonk has decided to quit wearing a visor. He started wearing one after the March 11 game in which his linemate, Marian Hossa, accidentally hit Toronto’s Bryan Berard in the eye with his stick. Berard has still not regained full vision in the eye. Bonk complained about the glare that comes off the visor. . . . Senator captain Daniel Alfredsson is questionable for tonight’s game against Atlanta because of a sore right hip.
