The Joint Was Jumpin’

Share

As a former Watts resident, I read with interest “Medley of a Lifetime” (by Emory Holmes II, Oct. 15). It was a fine article, except when Holmes refers to Watts as a “hick town.”

Harlem it wasn’t, to be sure, but it was close to it. If anything, Watts was hip, not hick. Performers such as Ellington, Basie, Lunceford, Eckstine, etc., I believe drew their audiences from there when performing at local nightclubs or G-rated venues such as the Orpheum, Paramount and Million Dollar theaters.

The article brought back some wonderful musical memories.
