The Rev. Zedar E. Broadous, president of the San Fernando Valley branch of the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People, will be among the speakers Thursday evening addressing the United Nations’ “International Year for the Culture of Peace” and how it applies to education, tolerance and respect for human rights.

The free lecture kicks off Soka University’s ninth annual Human Rights Lecture Series.

The United Nations has proclaimed 2000 to be the “International Year for the Culture of Peace,” and 2000-2010 as the “International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Nonviolence for the Children of the World.”

Broadous, an associate minister at Calvary Baptist Church of Pacoima and co-minister of Calvary Baptist Children’s Church Ministry, will be joined in the discussion by former teacher Stephanie Graham, a consultant to the Los Angeles County Office of Education, and Nancy Volpert, associate director of the Anti-Defamation League.
