Vigil for Victims of Domestic Violence

Share

A candlelight vigil and procession to remember victims and survivors of domestic violence will take place Saturday.

Organizers encourage community members to bring flowers or candles to the vigil, which coincides with National Domestic Violence Month in October. The vigil runs from 5 to 7:30 p.m. beginning at the Church of Cristo Rey at Cooper Road and Roosevelt Avenue, and ends at the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, 500 N. Juanita Ave.

“We invite family members and friends of victims and survivors of domestic violence to join us by sharing their stories and honoring the memory of their loved ones,” said Maria St. John, spokeswoman for the Farmworker Women’s Leadership Network, the event sponsor. “Peace in the world begins at home.”

The network, also known as Lideres Campesinas, is a nonprofit organization composed of women farm workers who are leading a statewide campaign to promote greater awareness of domestic violence. More than 876,000 women nationwide were victims of domestic violence in 1998, according to federal Department of Justice statistics.
