Architecture

The Mak Center for Art and Architecture will host an all-day walking tour of the Hayden Tract, focusing on such well-known buildings as the Box, the Beehive and the Umbrella by architect Eric Owen Moss. The 57-acre property in Culver City is part of a larger urban strategy known as Conjunctive Points. The once-abandoned warehouse area now features a wide variety of architecture and unconventional spaces, making it a popular work location for Angelenos. The day will include tours of 10 buildings, four lectures and an exhibition of Moss’ scale models for Conjunctive Points.

Want to learn how to make a bug box for a pet insect? Feel like getting a close look at a tarantula? Ever wonder what a sweet-and-sour silkworm tastes like? Entomology enthusiasts of all ages will have an opportunity to take part in all these creepy crawly experiences at the Big Bugs Bug-a-Boo Fest at the Los Angeles County Arboretum. This family event will offer all sorts of insect-related presentations, including educational and crafts programs for kids, and a humorous play about life in an ant colony presented by Pasadena’s Kidspace Museum. At 1 and 2:30 p.m., insect chef David George Gordon will prepare a variety of bug dishes such as “three bee salad” and “chocolate cricket torte.” Bon appetit!

Car Racing

Five drivers will vie for the CART FedEx Series Championship at the California Speedway. The winner will receive a $1-million bonus. Gil de Ferran, Adrian Fernandez, Paul Tracy, Kenny Brack and Roberto Moreno are the competing drivers at this year’s CART season finale. Legendary drivers will also take part in pre-race ceremonies, including superstars Mario Andretti, Al Unser Jr., Bobby Unser and Emerson Fittipaldi.

Bringing a new program titled “Lost Songs of a Rhineland Harper,” the medieval ensemble Sequentia returns to the Southland on Sunday. “Lost Songs” is a collection of Latin and German secular and sacred songs, stories and instrumental pieces from the 10th and 11th centuries that were copied into a manuscript by Anglo-Saxon monks in the Abbey of St. Augustine in Canterbury, England.
