Police Union Fails to Halt Consent Decree
A Superior Court judge on Thursday denied a police union’s request to issue a temporary restraining order to halt implementation of a federal consent decree mandating reforms in the Los Angeles Police Department.
However, Judge David P. Yaffe set a hearing for Nov. 17 to decide whether to issue a preliminary injunction to stop the city from moving forward with the deal until it confers with the Police Protective League.
The police union maintains that city and federal negotiators are moving forward with the legally binding agreement before listening to the concerns of the department’s officers. City officials, however, say they are planning meet-and-confer sessions to get the union’s input on the provisions in the document.
“It is my firm belief that the city attorneys and the Department of Justice are not bargaining in good faith with the league over this issue,” said Hank Hernandez, the union’s attorney. “It is our intent there will be no agreement on the consent decree without input from the league.”
