Flyover Uncovers Pot Farm in Matilija Canyon

Police confiscated 4,055 mature marijuana plants Thursday after authorities saw a makeshift pot farm during a routine flyover of Matilija Canyon.

The plants were growing on remote public land in Los Padres National Forest, said Capt. Dennis Carpenter, of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department narcotics unit.

Ventura County’s back country has long been a popular spot for drug dealers because of its thousands of acres of private and national forest land. Cultivators plant in April and begin harvesting at the start of September, authorities say. The county is one of the top five pot-growing regions in the state, federal officials say.
