OUTLOOK

If Irvine succeeds, the defense will lead the way. Bollard was outstanding in the playoffs at defensive end, and he and Porteous finished 1-2 in tackles for losses. Bollard, now a free safety, will be replaced by Young, who averaged five yards per carry. The defense won’t be big but will be extremely quick. Despite Mike Patterson’s graduation, linebacking should still be solid with Beuchat and Taylor returning. The key to the defense will be one-on-one coverage by the cornerbacks, and that burden falls on Patton and Lamm. Young, Abe and Doomey provide a solid backfield and, with Bollard and Patton, a good receiving corps for Otott, who didn’t play last season. The offensive line averages 266 pounds, but has only one starter returning, McKinney.
