Sports Equipment Bought for Students

Student leaders at Cal State Northridge’s satellite campus have purchased almost $400 in athletic equipment, which will be available free for students’ use during school hours.

The equipment includes footballs, baseball gear, volleyballs and a net, basketballs, croquet sets, horseshoes, Frisbees, Hackey Sacks and soccer balls.

Larry Johnson, president of Associated Students, the student government organization, said the group wanted to find ways to get students to linger after class at the fledgling school, which will evolve into an independent Cal State Channel Islands campus in coming years.

“There really are no activities for students on campus yet,” Johnson said. “So we felt one area to start was to provide sports equipment.”

The group will hold an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 26 on the south lawn of the campus off Lewis Road. To use the equipment, students must show an ID card, Johnson said.

Associated Students and campus officials are also working on creating an indoor student center, but that plan is in the early stages, Johnson said. The facility could eventually include a video arcade, television, seating areas, lockers and other amenities students have said they want to see on the campus.
