Nonstop Action From the Airlines

Southern Californians are getting a slew of new nonstop options from airlines. Some examples:

* Washington, D.C.: On Sept. 10, Trans World Airlines, which has been stepping up its Southern California service, begins the only scheduled nonstop flights between LAX and Ronald Reagan National Airport. Flights depart LAX at 8:30 a.m. and National at 5:30 p.m. each day. Round-trip fares begin at $696. Tel. (800) 221-2000.

* New York City: On Oct. 29, TWA begins the only nonstops between Orange County’s John Wayne Airport and JFK airport. Daily departures. Round trips begin at $528.

* Salt Lake City: On Sept. 6, United Shuttle will begin nonstops three times a day between LAX and Salt Lake City. (Delta and Southwest also offer nonstops on the route.) Round-trip fares begin at $150. Tel. (800) SHUTTLE.

* Buenos Aires: On Saturday Aerolineas Argentinas began the only scheduled nonstops between LAX and Buenos Aires. Introductory fares begin at $750 round trip for travel completed by Nov. 1. Flights are Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Tel. (800) 333-0276.

* Cook Islands: Since Aug. 18, Air New Zealand has been operating the only scheduled nonstops between LAX and Rarotonga. Service is on Fridays. Round trips begin at $1,468. Tel. (800) 262-1234.

* Toronto: On Nov. 1, American Airlines will begin daily LAX-Toronto nonstop service. (Air Canada already offers nonstop flights to Toronto several times each day.) Round trips begin at about $460. Tel. (800) 433-7300.
