‘Choose Life’
Re “Pope Backs Organ Donation but Not Cell Cloning,” Aug 30:
When Moses was speaking his last words to the Jews, he distilled his entire message into two words. He pleaded with them to “choose life.” The pope’s message is the same: If you truly respect your own unique life, you will logically (and actively) value the life of the embryo, the aged, the infirm, the wrongdoer, the different and all future persons. Recycling parts from a life intentionally extinguished may reduce our sense of guilt, but it doesn’t reduce our actual culpability. Real peace and actual justice are truly within our grasp. All of our complex moral dilemmas and ethical decisions boil down to this central, timeless issue: Choose life.
