Local business owners look forward to the three-day holiday weekend as a profitable end to the summer.

Although they can track their profits, government agencies can’t be as certain.

Because the harbor is owned and operated by the county, the city doesn’t see a large part of its revenue from it, said Ken MacLeod, director of the city’s Finance Department.

For one business manager, Patrick May, the Labor Day weekend meant bringing in several more 100-pound Alaskan halibut and almost doubling the amount of farm-bred Canadian salmon to greet the flock of tourists and locals.

May, manager at Jon’s Fish Market in Dana Point, said business can increase as much as 30% over the holiday as some people take in their last stretch of summer.
