Officers Shoot Man, 83, During Traffic Stop
Two police officers shot and wounded an 83-year-old man during a traffic stop Wednesday evening after he allegedly pointed a gun at them as they impounded his gray Mercedes-Benz, police said.
The unlicensed driver was pulled over by a pair of motorcycle officers for allegedly speeding near San Fernando Road and Sheldon Street, said Officer Don Cox, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department.
The officers, from the LAPD’s Valley Traffic Division, issued the driver a speeding ticket and were in the process of impounding his car when the man suddenly pulled out a handgun, Cox said.
“He was kind of upset,” Cox said, adding that the driver had already left his car when the violence erupted a little before 6 p.m. “Somehow, he came up with a handgun.”
Both officers fired their weapons, police said, and the driver, who did not fire, was hit at least three times.
He suffered gunshot wounds to his arm, leg, and foot, and was hospitalized Wednesday night at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, according to Cox.
A nurse supervisor at the hospital declined to release information on the man and referred media inquiries to police.
