* Saturday: Clean up your property. Clear gutters, cut back brush, trim trees and inspect your roof. Inspect your heating system and chimney, or arrange to have a professional do it. Check your home’s paint as well. Worn or peeling paint can invite rot in rainy season.

* Sunday: Schedule work that needs to be done. Booking roofers, chimney sweeps and furnace inspectors is typically easier before winter starts. Check your contractors with your local Better Business Bureau.
