74-Acre Brush Fire Fully Contained
A 74-acre brush fire sparked this week when a truck caught fire near Sulfur Mountain Ridge was fully contained by 4:30 p.m. Thursday, the Ventura County Fire Department said.
Although homes were briefly threatened, no property was damaged.
The blaze began about 4 p.m. Wednesday when a Culligan Co. water delivery truck caught fire on Clark Ranch Road near Sulfur Mountain Road and ignited brush, county fire officials said.
Mild temperatures and calm winds helped keep the blaze, which burned along steep terrain on Sulfur Mountain Ridge, from spreading quickly. However, the flames did come within 200 yards of a farmhouse on Clark Ranch Road. The structure did not burn.
Authorities said a massive initial response was crucial in helping bring the fire under control. About 150 county and federal firefighters responded to swiftly stamp out what they say could have been a major blaze.
Fire authorities were already on high alert because the state is in the middle of fire season, which began in May and usually, depending on the temperatures, ends in late November.
About 275 firefighters from Ventura, Santa Barbara and Los Angeles counties worked to extinguish the blaze, said Joe Luna, a spokesman for the Ventura County Fire Department.
