UCI Stays Unbeaten in Soccer With 3-1 Victory Over Buffalo

Eric Monterastelli and Aaron Colacion scored first-half goals as UC Irvine defeated Buffalo, 3-1, in the Anteaters men’s soccer tournament Friday at UC Irvine.

Monterastelli scored 44 seconds into the game on a header off a cross from Jon Spencer. Colacion scored in the 38th minute off an assist from Illa Nazarov.

Buffalo’s John Shanon scored three minutes into the second half, but UCI’s Scott Bowman capped the game with a goal in the 58th minute.

Tyler Reid had seven saves for Irvine (3-0), which plays Missouri at 10 a.m. Sunday.

In the UC Irvine women’s soccer tournament:

Cal State Fullerton 1, Columbia 0--Kim Houg scored on a corner kick with 42 seconds remaining to lift the Titans (3-3).

Fullerton goalkeeper Janine Ierardi stopped five shots in the shutout.

UC Irvine 3, Kansas 2--Defender Jennifer Griffith scored on a header to give the Anteaters a 3-1 lead in the 57th minute. The Jayhawks (2-3) drew within one with less than a minute remaining.

Erin Tuvey and Natalie Franklin scored for UC Irvine (3-1) and Ariana Downs had an assist. Allison Merrick had two saves for the Anteaters.

In nonconference women’s soccer:

Chapman 1, Linfield 0--Briana Benson scored with 15 minutes remaining for the Panthers (1-0). Nicole Madronia and Heather Reynolds each assisted on the goal.

Chapman outshot Linfield (0-1), which was called for 13 penalties, 8-2.

Hope International 4, Mills College 0--Forward Jeana French scored three goals for Hope (3-1).
