McDonald’s Chickens

Share

Good for McDonald’s for taking a bold step toward ensuring that the chickens by which it earns a large percentage of its profit receive more humane treatment than they traditionally have [“Egg Producers Are McMiffed,” Sept. 7].

Imagine spending your entire life in a noisy, smelly building, crammed with three or four others into a cage the size of a small microwave oven, making it difficult to even sit or lie down. And then being starved and mutilated on top of it all, to increase your “production.”

Yes, they’re just chickens, but they deserve a decent existence too. Humane treatment is a growing concern for businesses that earn their living from animals, and for patrons of those businesses. Naysayers such as Jerry Armstrong and Don Bell will eventually find themselves on the outs if they don’t keep pace.
