Deonce Whitaker rushed for 254 yards in 21 carries, scored two touchdowns and set up two others Saturday night as San Jose State defeated Stanford, 40-27.

It was the Spartans’ third consecutive victory over the Cardinal.

Marcus Arroyo passed for 199 yards and two touchdowns as San Jose State (1-1) rebounded from a 49-13 loss to No. 1 Nebraska. San Jose State last beat Stanford three straight times from 1981-83.

Stanford quarterback Randy Fasani passed for 361 yards and four touchdowns, but also threw a key interception and was sacked four times, three by linebacker Marshall Blount.

Stanford (1-1) did not allow an offensive touchdown in last week’s season-opening victory against Washington State, but didn’t have an answer for Whitaker, a former standout at Rancho Cucamonga High, who rushed for 147 yards against Nebraska last week.

Free safety Willie Adams intercepted Fasani’s pass and returned it 63 yards to give the Spartans a 6-0 lead four minutes into the game.

Stanford scored on its next two possessions, with Fasani throwing touchdown passes to senior receiver Jamien McCullum.

The Cardinal drove 80 yards in four plays, with Fasani finding McCullum wide open in the back of the end zone for a nine-yard scoring play with just over nine minutes left in the first quarter. That touchdown was set up by Fasani’s 67-yard pass to Luke Powell.
