Furnishings Auction at Clift Hotel

The landmark, 8-decade-old Clift Hotel in San Francisco, which was bought by entrepreneur Ian Schrager earlier this year, will auction off the lion’s share of its furnishings on Tuesday to make way for renovation work. A reservations clerk at the hotel said last week that “we’re renovating a few floors at a time,” and the hotel will remain open during the process.

The Internet site of San Francisco-based auctioneers Rabin Brothers states that “the entire contents of 326 guest rooms will be sold” (for later delivery as renovation proceeds), plus furnishings from throughout the hotel. Schrager, who developed the Mondrian on the Sunset Strip and several boutique hotels in New York and Miami, did not detail his plan for the Clift, other than vowing to “restore” the Redwood Room, the hotel’s historic bar, “to its former glory.”

Another Schrager property, the Miramar Hotel in Montecito, also will dispose of furniture and fixtures from its 214 rooms during a two-week liquidation sale beginning Thursday. The venerable seaside hotel closed today for a 15-month renovation. Schrager has said he plans to turn the Miramar into “a very laid-back village.”
