Castillo Retains WBC Lightweight Title

Jose Luis Castillo of Mexico retained his WBC lightweight title Friday night, fighting to a 12-round draw with hometown favorite Stevie Johnston at Denver.

The judges scored it 114-114, 115-114, 114-114.

Castillo (41-4-1) was making his first title defense since taking the championship from Johnson (30-2-1) on June 17 in Bell Gardens.

On the undercard, super heavyweight Eric “Butterbean” Esch of Jaspar, Ala., stopped Marcus Rhode of Detroit Lakes, Minn., at 2:06 of the third round.

Tonight in Las Vegas, WBA middleweight champion William Joppy defends his title against Hacine Cherifi of France at Las Vegas.

Joppy is 30-1-1 with 23 knockouts, Cherifi 30-3-1 with 19 knockouts.

Aside from Joppy vs. Cherifi, two other world title fights are scheduled on the MGM card. WBA junior lightweight champion Joel Casamayor defends against Radford Beasley, and WBA junior welterweight champ Sharmba Mitchell meets Felix Flores.

Virgil Hill was scheduled to challenge WBA cruiserweight champ Fabrice Tiozzo, but Hill withdrew after he suffered a shoulder injury.
