Claim Filed for Boy’s Medical Expenses

The Simi Valley city attorney’s office is investigating a claim for $100,000 in medical expenses made by the family of a 7-year-old boy who was seriously hurt when struck by a truck in April.

Gage Shadden was hit while crossing Los Angeles Avenue at Galt Street, police said.

The boy suffered a concussion and some swelling of the brain, said Simi Valley attorney James T. Studer, who filed the claim for Gage’s family.

Studer said that city officials should have known from the intersection’s accident history that it was dangerous and should have put up a traffic light.

A traffic light was installed this month.

Mayor Bill Davis declined to comment on the specifics of the case, but said, “No matter what happens, the city always gets sued. It has the deep pockets.”

Simi Valley City Atty. David Hirsch said the city had 45 days to respond to the claim after it was filed last week. If it is denied, Studer has six months to file a lawsuit.
