On “The Art of the Song,” the 1999 recording by Charlie Haden and Quartet West, the highlight was easily the set of four vocals performed by Shirley Horn. The incomparable singer appears with her own trio and joins the bassist’s ensemble tonight to re-create the album’s late-night mood.

Movies

Elvis Presley, Jackie Chan, Paul Newman and Robert Redford grace the truly big screen in the WideScreen Film Festival at Cal State Long Beach this week. The festival, which began Wednesday, highlights work from a broad spectrum of filmmakers, including John Ford, Richard Brooks, Mel Brooks and David Lynch. Friday night features an evening of Elvis-related material, including a double bill of the documentary “Elvis: That’s the Way It Is” and “Viva Las Vegas.” Saturday morning is highlighted by nearly an hour of wide-screen cartoons from the Walt Disney Studios paired with a screening of “Swiss Family Robinson.” Sunday is devoted to wide-screen westerns.
