The elusive planet Mercury appears near Venus this week, and you can see both during early evening twilight. Venus is brilliant and low in the west. Look for Mercury 5 degrees to the lower right of Venus and only 4 degrees above the horizon at 7:20 p.m. Mercury is one-thirtieth as bright as Venus, so use binoculars. The fainter star between them is Spica, in Virgo.
